Professional Biography

Meliké is a licensed clinical social worker who has worked for the past 12 years in community mental health, including 8 years at the UNC STEP clinic providing individual and group therapy to adults with SPMI (severe persistent mental illness, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders, co-occurring substance abuse disorders and complex PTSD). She earned her MSW at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2007 and completed her Certificate in Substance Abuse Studies. For the past 9 years, she has co-facilitated a DBT Skills group for adults. She completed the DBT Intensive Training in 2011 and participates in a monthly DBT Consultation team. She is in the process of pursuing certification in sex therapy with AASECT and training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT).

Personal Statement

I believe the ultimate goal of therapy is to help people feel more alive and develop a compassionate and loving relationship with themselves. I use humanistic, DBT, compassion-focused and mindfulness approaches and encourage clients to cultivate curiosity instead of judgment of self and others. I am drawn to experiential therapies and believe that healthy relationships, including the therapeutic relationship, have transformative power when we are able to fully experience their healing power in the present moment. Other models I have learned about and used in my evolution as a psychotherapist are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, the Trauma Resiliency Model (similar to Somatic Experiencing), Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and Non-violent Communication (NVC).
