Professional Biography:

Steve is a N.C. Licensed Psychologist and Partner with Human Resource Consultants, P.A. and is immediate past chair of its Board of Directors. He is co-creator (with Mike Thomas) of the Intensive Life Planning Workshop (see link below).

Steve received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to coming to HRC, where Steve has been for 20 years, he worked in university mental health settings at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (serving as director and psychologist with Penn’s University Counseling Service for 8 years).

Personal Statement:

Steve’s training in Counseling Psychology supports his more psychological “developmental task” or “life phase” approach to a client’s issues and concerns. Rather than a focus on diagnosis or pathology, his work with a client adapts to where the client “is” currently in her/his life – whether that be struggling with issues of establishing oneself in a career, wanting a more satisfying relationship, managing the stress of job, family or financial responsibilities, enhancing self-confidence/self-esteem, or dealing with the effects of recent or past traumatic situations.

Steve uses his broad experience and training in various modalities of therapy and counseling (relationship centered, cognitive behavioral, hypnotherapy, EMDR, career development) to work collaboratively with a client to identify and reach identifiable goals and outcomes. Many people come for him to be their objective “sounding board”; others for help in getting unstuck, calming fears, gaining perspective and being urged toward action. Warm, supportive, challenging and genuine would be characteristics past clients would identify with him.

In his work with couples, Steve encourages partners to be collaborative in setting goals, in resolving issues and in honestly and caringly challenging each other to grow. While influenced by many writers and researchers in the field of couple's therapy, most significant have been the work of Virginia Satir, Harwell Hendrix, and John Gottman (author of The Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work).
