Clinical Associates of HRCHRC has experienced licensed psychologists and social workers who see clients for the evaluation and treatment of a wide range of problems and needs such as depression, anxiety, stress management, phobias, marital and family issues, school problems, work and career issues, and substance abuse. They provide individual counseling and psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and marital/family therapy. Services are available to individual adults, adolescents, and children, and to couples and families.
Neil Barry, PhDBiography: Dr. Barry received his PhD from UNC-Chapel Hill. He has been in practice since 1994 and specializes in couples counseling, adult depression, anxiety, grief work, and trauma therapy. He completed Level II training in EMDR in 2000. While maintaining his practice, he has also worked at Disability Determination Services, Dorothea Dix hospital, and Wake County Crisis and Assessment Services. He is currently an adjunct faculty member at Peace College. Dr Barry is also certified with the National Multiple Schlerosis society to provide training to other mental health professionals interested in working with individuals with MS or other debilitating physical illnesses. Peter Battis, EdDBiography: Dr. Battis has over 25 years of clinical experience in inpatient and outpatient settings with adults, and has worked with adolescents and families since 1976. Dr. Battis joined HRC in 1991. In addition to individual and family therapy with adults and adolescents, he has a particular interest in marital therapy. He has trained in marital therapy with Dr. John Gottman. In addition to his private practice, he is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UNC School of Medicine, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at UNC-CH. He is also Director of Psychological Services for the UNC Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Center. She received her PhD from Kent State University in Ohio, and then practiced in a community mental health clinic in North Carolina for 16 years, working from staff psychologist to Outpatient Director. She developed an internship program there for psychology students and helped to build their psychological testing services. She has extensive training in personality assessment using the MMPI-2 and the Rorschach Inkblot Test. Her primary treatment style uses cognitive therapy techniques as well as other solution focused approaches. Dr. Heil’s areas of treatment specialty include individual, group, and couples’ therapy with adults; a special interest in geriatric populations, and psychological testing – both cognitive, and personality. Charles Holton, LCSWBiography: Mr. Holton received his Masters in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He worked at the Granville County Mental Health Center and at Kaiser Permanente before joining HRC. He is the Past President of the North Carolina Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He has taught psychotherapy to psychiatry residents at Duke and to social work graduate students at UNC-CH, as well as supervised both graduate students from East Carolina and psychtherapists in private practice. He has studied intensively the self-relations approach to psychotherapy with Stephen Gilligan, PhD and co-sponsors an annual weeklong residential training on the NC coast. Mr. Hrynewych (also known as "Bo") was the coordinator of adolescent dual diagnosis treatment at Duke Hospital and later the clinical director of the Duke Addictions Program between 1999 and 2000. He has extensive training in family therapy, group therapy, and addictions treatment, and is a well-known trainer for mental health and substance abuse professionals. In his practice he sees adults and adolescents with anxiety, mood disorders, substance abuse issues, and problems in their family relationships. He specializes in working with young people, ages 10-25, and their families. Mr. Hrynewych offers groups for adults in recovery from the abuse of mood altering substances and other compulsive behaviors. Martha Simpson, PhD, CCASBiography: Dr. Simpson is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years experience in individual psychotherapy with adults and college age young adults. She received her doctorate from UNC-CH in 1975 and practiced in San Diego, California for many years until returning to North Carolina in the early 90’s. Most recently she has been in practice in Greensboro, with a private practice and a position in Behavioral Medicine with Guilford Pain Management, P.A. She has taught at the California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego State University, University of California at San Diego Medical School and Elon University.
